Mrs. Hannah Stern (née Arendt) is in jail. Martial law has been declared in 1933 Berlin, and as an uncertain future faces the city, Hannah is determined to get out. Taken into custody at the library by the surprisingly personable Officer Frick of the Gestapo, she is being held on the suspicion she is copying and distributing radical texts that might upend the ruling class’s order. Hannah’s philosophy education is particularly vexing to Frick’s investigation, and the arrival of a Zionist lawyer only complicates matters. But her prudent use of Frick’s interest in her mind and writings, along with their perceived shared enemies, might just be her ticket to freedom in this tension-filled, cat-and-mouse political drama. |
